No one thought to add either wiki to their advice?

Official Guild Wars Wiki

Unofficial but more complete Guild Wars Wiki

When your finished playing at night run the "..\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" -image command to download ALL of the game content to prevent loading between areas, Towns, and Outposts. From the run line (or command prompt) it will be somthing like this if you took the defaults durring install

"c:\Program Files\Guild Wars\gw.exe - image"

From the Official Wiki site:

-image
Forces the game to load a complete update.

Important: The program terminates after the update is completed; since Guild Wars will not be able run with this parameter on, make sure to remove it after all the content has been downloaded.

Downloading all the contents takes approximately 6 hours to complete at 150KB/s (broadband connection).

Recommended: Create an additional shortcut on your desktop to Guild Wars that is labeled "Guild Wars Updater" and has this command line switch.

Hope this helps out.

Here's one of the tips that really helped me early on and didn't come intuitively:

Hold down the alt button and take a look around -- it will show you all of the creatures/NPC's that are not hostile to you in green. This works for merchants etc. while you're in a town or outpost, and makes it easy for you to find who you're looking for, even if your line of sight is obstructed by a wall or hill, kinda like X-Ray vision. You can then double click the text to auto-move to the NPC.

On the same note holding the ctrl button down while you're in an explorable area will show you the hostile creatures so you'll know what you're coming up against before you get there. You can use that to choose a target before you ever engage in battle.

Have fun -- this is a great game!

My Advice is simple..

This is a game you will enjoy immensley if you take your time

As you said you have nightfall(do tutorial and gets you some gold as well as akills and not forgetting Koss your first hero

This will give you heros as you progress into the game from level 5

These guys will assist you as part of your team when your exploring ect

Do all the little quests this helps you learn as you go along...

As starting out pick everything up and sell it to the merchants, thats of no use to your own char...

I wont go into what char to chose..all i will say is....Try an elementist to begin with so that by using it as a learning curve you then can see first hand whats in store for you.....But dont listen to this is best thats best

Play what you enjoy thats the main thing to enjoy g/w good luck and enjoy the game

And one more note on what AshenX said - don't delete a character just because you forgot to pick up an item from Pre-Searing. You can always just go buy the Xunlai storage space, then make a second character, get the item you needed, save it in the Xunlai chest, and it will be available to your first character.

Is that right, upper classmen, or am I way offbase?

There's really nothing in pre sear that will make a big difference.

The most important thing you should know is that make sure when you choose how your character looks like on the creation screen, it is the look that you really really want =) Those are the only things that you cannot go back and change for your character =) It sucks to get stuck with a character with looks that you're bored with. It sucks even more if you have to remake it =)

Cheers.

I'm referring to the tapestry shred, which everyone says is crucial...

Nassau, the tapestry shread is really not too necessary. You use it to obtain a side quest in GW:EN, afterwhich you will be given a mesmer green off-hand (I believe, since I have never completed the quest, and I never used a shred) However by the time you have completed your campaign and completed GW:EN, you will probably have several or plenty of green weps that you bought or found. I forgot the stats for the off-hand, but I believe there are better ones out there. And btw, you gotta store that thing in storage for who knows how long until you actually reach that quest.

Unless all your char slots are full you can always make a new char, get the shred, give it to another char in GWEN and get the quest/item.

Its a Flute if memory serves.
